goodbye

"you're saying goodbye to me, aren't you?"
"yes"
her ear to his chest, she listened to his
pounding heart. someday, she thought,
another ear will be listening to
the very same rhythm. that thought
saddened her in depths she didn't
know she possessed. but no amount
of sorrow for what once was, for what
would never be could make her stay.
she was gone already. she could not
pinpoint the exact moment she had left;
she hadn't really seen it coming
in the first place. it didn't matter.
she was gone.

all of the joy once felt, all of the memories
pulsed through her heart, keeping time
with the pounding beneath his chest.
she felt like she wanted to die;
this desire, this yearning to live
without him was killing her.
